We looked up as we heard the fluttering of wings high above us. Marlene and I stood alone in a huge, dark hall. The floor was covered in soot and bird droppings and a strong chemical smell hung in the air. This old power plant had been deserted for more than a decade and was the perfect place to photograph a series of unique nudes - something very different from the usual. I had to make special arrangements to get in, as the premises were off-limits to the public. I could see why - the place looked like one huge health hazard: pools of oily sludge, gaping holes in the floor, rickety staircases and crumbling walls. Clambering down a steel ladder we found an underground level. Massive steel beams with chunky studs stood in a row while an ominous tunnel led off to one side - it reminded me of the movie "Alien". Marlene had to be careful not to scrape her bare skin on the rusted and exposed metal. She was wearing only a pair of shoes, gloves and some industrial-looking goggles. We'd tried to pick accessories that would fit her surroundings, but the contrast between her nudity and the imposing setting was still huge. This was probably the last place one would imagine to find a vulnerable woman walking around and posing without any clothes on - instead, a full-body protective suit seemed more appropriate. We spent several days exploring the huge complex, moving from one intriguing area to the next. One room we entered resembled a medieval torture chamber, with spikes and rivets protruding from the walls and long slits of light falling across the floor. Marlene posed for a series of photos here: leaning back against the cold concrete with her hands above her head, she pushed her breasts out in seeming defiance - her nipples appeared a vivid pink, the rest of her body white as alabaster.
